The Best Gifts

nuts and tea giftWe get too much for the holidays- too many things. Our house is overflowing with everyone’s generosity, and we appreciate it tons. But some of the nicest gifts we received are the homemade ones.

Case in point, one of my coworkers gave me a bag with some delicious fire and spice nuts (a great combo of cashews, pecans, walnuts and crystalized ginger) and some ginger tea (a mixture of honey and fresh grated ginger). The whole thing was sweetly wrapped in a paper bag (which I love the idea of recyclable paper wrap- see the picture). This is a nice idea to do with your kids as they can help you make gifts like this.

Super Snacking Advice!

nuts!Snack- I love that word, cause I love snacks. And this is prime snack season. I would rather snack all day than eat a big meal. I see it happening to my toddler- she just wants a little of this and that all day. Don’t get me wrong - I am not talking chips and dip, cookies and candy. (although I can be caught lovin’ cookies and candy- I still try to stick to healthier selections) But we are hummus eaters, apple slices with cheese, rice cakes with almond butter kind of snackers. Well- my husband might disagree with the rice cakes, but its usually good stuff.

I got a great email from one of my favorite sites- kidoinfo.com. It is a list of ’super foods’ you’ll see around this time of year, some for you dinner plate some for perpetual snack time. It is a list of stuff I enjoy eating and its nice to know how good they are for you. So enjoy the wares of the season, and snack away!

Out to eat with your babies!

We live in Providence, RI and love to go out to eat. We have a toddler and she loves to go out to eat too. Although, I think for her its more about the hustle bustle and people than the food. Anyway, our restaurant selection changes when we are with her, but being the great food city that Providence is, we have a few to choose from.

Often we head to Doherty’s East Ave Cafe, you’ll often see many little-ones in high chairs, the food is pretty good- the wait staff is great with the kids. Oak Restaurant is another good one but more suitable for brunch or lunch with a baby than dinner. India- if yours eats Indian like mine, they’ll love it. Apsara can be busy and cramped but its usually filled with families and patrons that know they’ll be there. If you need to go to a more upscale place, you won’t look crazy bringing them to Rue d’Lespoire. Pho Horn is fab if they like Vietnamese. There is always Gregg’s, it’s all family and high on most Rhode Islander’s lists of a good spot to take the kids. Hope Street Pizza is a kid pleaser, just about all kids love pizza. I would bring my daughter anywhere but I know that there are many parents that go to some nice upscale places as a night away from the kids, so I keep that in mind and stay away anyplace that is quiet, romantic or stuffy.

As always I’d love so more suggestions of kiddie-friendly good food places in Providence or elsewhere! Bon appetito babies!
